When I heard this, I'm sure my mouth dropped way open...
I work at a nursery where we sell plants and flowers. We send out advertisements all over the country and send out orders through the mail service. So far this season has been an extremely busy one for us and we have been working from 6:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. putting in mandatory 10 hour days. I work in packing. I pull orders off the line and put them into the proper size boxes and check off the items to make sure the order is correct, then add the proper labels and send it on its way.
Just across from me works a little blonde haired lady named Millie. She is one fantastic worker too and works very fast paced. She is always there for work on time and she never misses a day. She is an older lady so I had often wondered about her age. She couldn't be as old as my mom I've often thought. My mom is 68 and is retired.
The other day the subject was directed that way and I came out and asked her about her age. She told me that she was 70.
I was amazed. Not so much the fact that she was 70 years old and still working. There must be many folks that are in their 70's and still working. I was blown away by the fact of her being 70 and all of the energy she had.
"So you must not be a smoker," I commented to her.
"Oh yes, I smoke," she said, "but very light." She went on to say that 1 pack of smokes normally lasted her about 3 days.
"Are you on a special diet," I enquired further?
"No no no,"she told me, "I eat what ever I want. Whats the sense in living if you can't enjoy life?"
Wow, I thought to my self, this is truely amazing.
Millie then went on and volunteered more information about herself. She was one out of 11 children and all of her brothers, (as I recall she had 4), died when they were in their 40's.
One of her brothers, she told me, was on the same battle ship that had come under attack and claimed the lives of all five Sullivan brothers. (Which they later had made a movie about.) However she said that her brother was one of the fortunate ones who had survived the attack.
All of her sisters but two, she told me, were gone as well and the one sister still living, was a little younger than her and would turn 69 on October 24th. That would make her one month younger than my mom who will turn 69 on the last day of September. Her other sister she said would turn 75 on April the 4th. Now thats ironic too because my mom's little sister will turn 67 on that very same day.
I asked her what she liked to do in her free time. She told me that she didn't get a whole lot of free time because she had another full time job.
When I heard this, I'm sure my mouth dropped way open.. "What do you mean?" I asked, "another full time job?" I work another job part time and it almost kills me and I think of myself as some kind of Superman for doing it. Ha! Hold the phone here!
She went on to say that she took care of a lady each night. Did some light cleaning for her, prepared her supper and helped her with her bath each night. "Then we set and watch a little T.V. and I get home around 10 each night."
Holy Cow, Energizer Bunny step aside, I thought. The only thing I could say to her was, "Wow, you are truly blessed."
She agreed, "Yes, I sure am, I know that I am."
With that, we both smiled and turned back once again to our work."
A few days later she really blew me outta the water when she told me she owned 3 Harley Davidson motor cycles and still likes to ride them and her three wheeler.
