A Spin-off of Jamie Burnside

After reading and artical written by Jamie Burnside entitled, "McDonold's Breakfast," (see link below,) it reminded me of a recent experience that I had a few weeks ago when visiting the drive-thru of a McDonalds restaurant. I was on my way to work and also had a co-worker riding along with me. We happened to pull up when there was no line at all, which was nice for a change. No sooner than I could bring my car to a stop, the drive-thru attendant comes over the speaker and says, "go ahead with your order." I told her I would need a second to decide what I wanted.
I then asked my friend if he knew what he wanted. He started to tell me when again the attendant says, "go ahead with your order." So I go ahead and told her what my friend was wanting to order, and she says, "that'll be $5.29, pull on around." Then I had to inform her that I wasn't done ordering. "Well I do have another order for you," I told her.
She must have turned off her head set bt then though because, there was no response. So I pulled on up to the next window and told her that I had another order.
She rolls her eyes at me then asks abruptly, "and what is that,?" I told her that she seemed to be in too big of a hurry.
"I ain't in no hurry, now would you like something else?" I went ahead and gave her the rest of my order and then gave her the money and pulled ahead.
An older lady who looked like the manager was working the next window where they dish the food out to you, so I asked her if she was the manager and she cinfirmed that she was. I told her that she may want to think about replacing the young lady that she had working the drive-thru with someone who could better deal with your customers. Thats about the time the drive-thru girl walked up to hear the conversation.
"What was the problem," the manager lady enquired?
I told her, "Well, the girl just seemed to be trying to rush me with the order, I mean I pulled up to the menu board and she told me to go ahead with my order before I had even came to a complete stop in the car and she didn't even say, "welcome to McDonalds," don't you all welcome your customers anymore? She just seemed to have a bit of a negitive attitude."
"Oh, whatever, whatever," the girl started saying.
"See there what I mean," I asked the manager?
The manager didn't say anything at all, she just handed me the food and goes, "well theres your order sir."
Thats when I really became ticked. I told her, "No, no on second thought... just let me have the money back, I'll go across the street to Ralleys and eat, we'll see if they appreciate their customers any better over there."
So, she gave me the money back and I, you might say, left her standing there holding the bag. By the way, ralleys was excellent. The food was good and hot and the service was lovely. GCJ

My wife managed McDonald's for years. I always wanted her to quit because it stressed her out. I am not excusing anyone's behavior. The manager was clearly in the wrong for not addressing the issue immediately and making the customer feel vindicated.

People who work at McDonalds don't want too be there. The majority of people who work for McDonald's and fast food generally fall into two categories. People who have made bad decisions and are forced to work at some craphole, and snooty kids whose parents force them to pay for their car insurance by working at fast food. It is very hard for anyone who hates their life to enact kindness upon seemingly snobbish people who feel they have the right to flip shit at some lowly fast food worker. But many in the industry do follow the rules in order to keep the precious little money they make. So even though they are saying "Thank You" and "Have a Nice Day", within most are thinking ~Jesus, when is my shift going to be over~Damn this dude is ugly and fat~What a loser. I have managed fast food chains and so has my wife. These are the kinds of employees managers are forced to deal with.

ok i used to work at mcdonalds as well.... And i tell u, even though its only Mcdonalds it is a very stressful job.... and like the previous comment, i hated my job, and i was only there due to poor decision making...... the kind is service people recieved from me, depended on the mood i was in, or wether or not i was having a bad day...... But i do feel that u were treated badly, and the manager was obviously shit at her job, as they are taught to treat complaints seriously......she should not have rushed you along, or made u leave dissatisfied...... If it makes u feel any better, doing a cash refund would have pissed them off... as it takes time, food got wasted ect....... But i garauntee as soon as u left they would hav had a big bitch about u....... But oh well shit happens, ppl are rude, its life...

Hey, I used to work at McDonalds too. I was the fry man. But ya know? I never treated anyone disrespescful while I was there.
A job is a job no matter where you work. You represent that company that you are working for. I have worked at jobs much more stressful than McDonalds. I use to deliver oxygen to the sick and elderly. Now you wanna talk about tuff people to deal with, lets talk about the sick and elderly. First of all, they are very ill and do realize that they don't have much time left here in this ole world. They are old and are very set in their ways and want things done their way for sure. They can hardly eat their meals because they are so short of breath. However I did accomadate them and treated them all with as much dignity and respect as I could muster. I feel anyone else deserves the same. Just because you work at McDonalds is no excuse to cut people short and make them feel that they are unimportant. After all, YOU did apply for the job in question. GCJ

Hi. Thanks for referencing my article. I had forgotten about that. That still burns me up when I don't get a stir stick with my coffee. (That's really my only gripe. I actually get good service at McDonalds... at least better than at other fast-food restaurants.)

GCJ, you asked me about my pictures on my site. I take them all with a JVC Digital Video Recorder 3000. The photographs that I put on my weblog are all screen captures of video. It takes five or ten minutes to get the pictures from the camera into the editing program, save them, then edit and optimize them in the photo program. (It took a really long time while I was learning! -Also, I need to do it often lest I forget!) I really like the video capture. It is relatively easy, and it ensures that I get the best picture possible each time.

Put the crappy job aside, people seem to forget the golden rule of treating others as they would like to be treated. I have to keep this in mind at all times as a parent of small children and point out those who are behaving badly as examples of what not to do. Everyone has bad days but that never excuses treating an innocent bystander badly. When it is treating a customer, employee or even a child, you need to put yourself in that other person's shoes.

The manager should at the very least have said, "My apologies sir. I will look into the matter. Here is your order. Have a nice day." How hard is that? I have worked in very lowly jobs. Sweeping floors, bagging grocieries, cleaning hotel rooms, waiting tables, it all sucked. I still made an effort to do the best job I could at whatever I was doing and do it the way I would hope others would do for me.

I wouldn't let it taint you against McDs. You could have that happen anywhere. I commend you for how you handled the situation.

Thank you all for the comments. No, I do still eat at McDonalds Jill, just not at that particular one. Also the one here in the next town over. I have had trouble getting quality food there so I stay away from there as well. You are right. You can run into people with bad attitude just about anywhere and sometimes where you least expect it. I have to agree that in general customer service seems to be going out the window. What really aggravates me is when the employee acts like you are bothering them. Also send a written letter of complaint. The manager at that McDonald's might not have been concerned but I guarantee her manager would probably be and definately the owner will be. I have had very good results from sending a written letter of complaint. It seems to get their notice more than an email or phone call to the 800 number. I guess because they know you have to be pretty aggravated to take the time to write and mail them a letter. I really appreciate good service when I recieve it. I think everyone should start making a point to give positive feedback when they recieve great service.

my "BEEF" is not with the employees but the food it's self, I order a big mac and there are no words to describe what was sold to me, I remember the big macs with nice meat patties, pickels, and that speacial sauce that made it the big mac, but here I was served a paperthin patty burger, no pickels, no ketchup and believe there was the sauce alright, the amount of the size of a quarter!!!!
I didn't complain there and then cause being with my children I didn't want to embarass them so I intented to send an email to McDonald's as soon as I'd get home...... well, well, well what a surprise ,after doing aserches on google Ino where is ther an email to be found for costumer service to their head offices............
I'm from quebec, Canada.....so I looked for an email address anywhere in the world....loll nothing!!!
I think they should have more respect for the people who made them what they are today, and who knows if they don't improve their services in all ways competition might take over,
Next time I feel for a good burger I will go to Wendy's for a bacon cheese classic.........no more McDonald's
If anyone knows their email please forward it to me, that would be so kind.........

I've been actively boycotting McDonald's for almost five years now, and I don't miss it at all. I tend to stray away from almost all fast food joints, but I radically oppose McDonald's for their barbaric conquer-all history. They don't care what you think. They care that you buy. They simplify all their equipment so that they can hire the youngest, most ill-educated people they can (not that everybody that works there is, mind you), so that they can keep a higher turnover rate. That way, they don't have to pay insurance. They smash down unions, and fire people who ask too many questions. They have imposed false city ordinances in order to shut down residential homes and to skipping zoning laws, so that they may build a restaurant on the side of the highway. Never mind the people that voted against having them in their neighborhood...McDonald's business won't even come from them. Their proceeds will not go back into the community. They have a sea of lawyers who sue every living thing on earth with a 'Mc' in their name, including the Lord McDonald of Scotland for having a business with HIS name on it. Last time I checked the lineage was around a lot longer than the restaurant. McDonald's is a shifty, backstabbing organization, and deserves to have their name stamped out for good. Besides, you don't want to eat that crap anyway, do you?

Very good comment poi dog. Now that you mention it, no I really don't wanna eat that crap. GCJ
